Epic three night run premiering Collapse: a post ecological requiem at REDCAT. It was a challenge to learn and begin rehearsing the whole show only a week before go time but everybody brought their A-game and the show made astounding progress from opening night to sold out closing night. The show itself is an hour long song-cycle about man-made disasters composed by Daniel Corral, performed by Timur and the Dime Museum with video accompaniment by Jesse Gilbert, post-apocalyptic costumes of Victor Wilde (Bohemian Society), and presented by Beth Morrison Productions. If you missed out, you can find it covered in the LA Times, Artillery and DTLAnews. We are excited to bring it to festival audiences in Miami, Rotterdam and NY.
Greetings from Austin, TX. I’ve been on the road with Incan Abraham for just over a month and we are currently in the throws of the madness that is SXSW. It’s been a great run but I am looking forward to being back home for a bit to do LA things. And there are many LA things waiting for me so rest and relaxation are not on my list of options. Among them are three nights at REDCAT premiering Daniel Corral’s new multi-media opera piece for the Dime Museum, Collapse: a post-ecological requiem, gigs with the Alexander Noice Sextet, The Vinny Golia Large Ensemble, and Incan Abraham’s record release show. Check the shows page for dates.
I also want to share with you documented proof that in spite of all the indie rock and non-swinging contemporary music I am still a jazz fiend at heart. If you haven’t been to one of our monthly gigs at 1642 then you probably haven’t heard my jazz quartet which focuses mostly on covering classic Blue Note albums of the late 50s to early 60s. Ladies and gentlemen, meet The Essentials…
Hi people! I hope this new year marks a fruitful new chapter for you. It certainly is proving to be a year of change for me. Ripe with opportunities and challenges alike. Thusly I thought it would be fitting to revamp and restyle the website with the help of my media guru Jess Castillo. Hope you like it!
I am currently gearing up for a six week US tour with Incan Abraham. It’ll be my longest stretch of tour yet and I’m looking forward to getting in the van with these guys. LA peeps can catch us before we leave on Monday February 3rd at the Echoplex. Just click on that link over there on the left hand side for deets. And hear “Concorde”, a track from the forthcoming LP, featured on the all mighty Pitchfork.
In other news, the second Mystery Bau video for the song “Bite It” premiered today. Check it out on youtube. In it, I cameo as one of three judges of an all girl hot dog eating contest… I also can’t wait to put out the demo album of my jazz group The Essentials. We cranked out five tunes one night at the Record Plant in Hollywood with Jake Smith engineering and will hopefully be hustling up some more gigs with it. So holler at me if you need some good jazz in your life, or at your favorite bar, or at your swank cocktail party or backyard hot dog eating contest. You can also enter your email address here to keep abreast of all things Essentials:
Thanks for checking in, peeps. I will try to write more frequent news blogs on here and maybe even offer up more fun things beside just boring updates about gigs! That is my nu yrs resolution. xoxo
My jazz group, The Essentials, plays once a month at 1642 Beer and Wine in Historic Filipinotown! EVERY FIRST SATURDAY. It’s a great bar and this gig is always a good time so come on out for the hang. Here we are providing some background tunes for the Alex Theatre’s closing ceremony last month:
Also, don’t miss the Tes Elations EP “Base Awakes”. Even though the band broke up earlier this year we already had an album in the bag and couldn’t be happier with the fruits of our labor. So that’s why we’re presenting it as the band’s official tombstone and giving it away as a free digital download. Right here: http://www.teselations.com/baseawakes.html
